I enjoyed painting these pictures in Fuerteventura in March 2018. I went out early in the morning just after sunrise and was back for breakfast. This is a unique volcanic desert landscape with a rugged coastline, very popular with walkers and surfers. We were up to the north of the island at Arigo Mare.

Through the trees
In the autumn, while out walking on sunny mornings, I became fascinated by the light falling on the trunks of trees. Working from photographs taken, often through railings or at bus stops, a series of paintings emerged. The painting are nonspecific, attempting to catch something of that miniworld of light and shadow and mystery, that can be found at end of a garden, over a wall or through the railing at the end of your street.

Gates and Doorways
This year gates and doorways have interested me. Why? That's why: If you could explain in words why bother painting. All showing the effects of time and wear and possibly neglect, but isn't there something about them? Hopefully I have caught a bit of that something in these paintings.
This year I have attempted a portrait of a friend of ours, well known and loved in the town. Here's Bill.

The Sentinels of Youghal
I love the Groynes on the beach at Youghal. You could consider them a bit like Ogham stones. That is the kind of idea behind these paintings.

A Trip Around Capel Island
Heading out.
Toward Knockadoon
Around the side.
Just around the back.
Dark side of the Moon.
The tower.
Passing by.
Rocks and birds.
Looking back at the tower.
Still looking back through layers of rocky outcrops .
Around the rugged rocks.....
..and we are on our way back home to Youghal.
